Advice for PR Interns #pr101

I asked some of my favorite Twitter PR friends to tell me what their advice for PR interns would be. Here is the list of all the amazing, and helpful, responses I received. (I would also strongly suggest following them as well.)

Share your own advice! What helped you? What did you learn while interning that you wish you would have known before hand?

Success begins with goals, determination and learning everyone's name! Don't hide at your desk. Network in the office!

Ask questions if you don't understand something. Otherwise, it'll be assumed you know what you're doing.

Attention to detail, plan ahead, never assume, outside the box pitches for days. Short & sweet messages always.

Be open to possibilities within your internship! You never know what will blossom.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, but exhaust all research options before you do.

My advice is stay focused on your tasks, take time to look at details, and always looking for opportunities to engage.

Take every opportunity presented to you into consideration. and whenever possible say, "yes!" be reliable and dedicated.

Don't give up and choose carefully! Find clients that fit you!

You don't know absoutely everything about PR. You don't even know how to scratch the surface. Find the thought-leaders in your organization, and get their wisdom, input, and thoughts. They know exponentially more than you do, and often are happy to share their knowledge.

Be open to learn new things every single day and always maintain a "CAN DO" attitude. Absorb as much information as possible and keep your eyes and ears open. Your internship might become the foundation of a successful PR career and might teach you more than a Masters Degree. I've done three internships and this philosophy has always helped me.

Be eager to learn. Be passionate. Always ask questions.

Also, it's important to be innovative! Share your past experience and try to apply it to your current position.

Be creative, ask questions, keeping a diary of what you did and learned each day will also help you grow in the field!

Be the first one there and the last to leave, and always go the extra mile!

Stand out! Prepare to work hard & long, with a smile! Always check in to see if there's more to be done, hint: there usually i.

Stay hungry, focused & speak up!

Be on time, work hard, be a sponge, don't act entitled, and ask questions!

Always go with your gut! Instinct is paramount.

  2. This is a collection of great advice. We always find that the best interns ask targeted questions instead of just "Is there anything I can help you with?" i.e. observe and listen to what is going on and ask for tasks based on what you know is happening on a project/ meeting. You are then more likely to be given more challenging tasks if you already show you know what's going on. Positivity and enthusiasm is incredibly important.
